When Working with a strong minority presence it is important to understand the students' culture, background and values. Critical race theory argues that there are many racially charged ideologies that impose on the success of African Americans and other minorities. In education I believe this means teaching from a standpoint that accepts that there is a certain amount of Euro-centric privelage inherant in society, which means educators need to teach from a point of view that uplifts minority students. Scholars have promoted what is called emancipatory teaching through Culturally Relevant Pedegogy to empower minority students.
In this study I used the work of Tupac Shakur to introduce the class to global and societal themes. Throughout the unit Tupac's poetry and music are used to engage the class in issues of homlessness, single motherhood, and the racial disparities involving arrest statistics in america. The unit is also being used to establish a connection to the themes used in the North Carolina standard course of study as a way to introduce material that is culturally relevant to the demographic I teach.

Although race can definitely play a part in issues effecting the United States and education, there are some issues that transcend color. This photostory represents the research I did in bibliotherapy. While in Dr. Crissman's Young Adult Literature course I came a cross a student having serious issues coping with personal and emotional issues. These issues were effecting her abilities to perform academically in a negative manner. I had previously researched bibliotherapy and found out some of the students symptoms. I worked to match a young adult novel with a problem she was having.
